Real Madrid attacker Rodrygo has issued an update on his future at the club after comments he made in recent interviews were "taken completely out of context."
Los Blancos supporters were left bemused and frustrated after the 23-year-old seemingly left the door open to leaving the club during an interview with DAZN on Tuesday in the build-up to Saturday's Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.
Asked whether he wishes to stay at Real Madrid, Rodrygo said: "Yes, well, anything can happen. I have a contract here, but the years I've been here have been a pleasure for me. As I said, I always want to be at this club, but let's see."
The Brazil international then gave a more definitive response about his future during an interview with El Desmarque, saying: "Yes, yes, I am happy. It's the club I've always dreamed of playing for, so I'm happy."
"I always say the same thing, that I always want to play with the best," Rodrygo added. "If [Kylian] Mbappe comes, I'd love to play with him. As I said: it's not a problem for me, it's a problem for the coach."
Rodrygo insists he wants to stay at Real Madrid
According to The Athletic, Real Madrid chiefs did not appreciate Rodrygo's comments and were disappointed that they surfaced just days before the Champions League final as they do not want anything to divert attention from their Wembley showdown.
Rodrygo has subsequently been linked with a potential move to Liverpool, who have allegedly shown an interest in the attacker ahead of the 2024-25 season.
However, Rodrygo has taken to social media to address the speculation and reiterate his desire to remain a Real Madrid player.
"A very annoying situation occurred where one of my interviews was taken completely out of context," Rodrygo posed on 'X'. "To be very direct, I am very happy at Real Madrid.
"I live a dream every day and leaving the club of my life does not cross my mind. Now, we continue with history to make for the 15th [Champions League title]. Hala Madrid and nothing more."
As quoted by 90min, Rodrygo's agent has also commented on his client's future, saying: "Rodrygo is happy. Rodrygo dreamed and fought like crazy to get his space.
"Rodrygo only thinks about becoming a champion on Saturday. Please don't take things out of context, especially at this moment. Whoever knows him knows that he is a real Madridista."
Since joining Real Madrid from Santos in 2019, Rodrygo has made a total of 215 appearances for Los Blancos in all competitions, scoring 54 goals and providing 41 assists.
Only Federico Valverde (4,190) and Antonio Rudiger (3,986) have played more minutes in 2023-24 than Rodrygo (3,616), who has contributed with 17 goals and nine assists in 50 games and is bidding to win his 11th trophy as a Real Madrid player this weekend.
The attacker has already won three La Liga titles, three Supercopa de Espanas, one Copa del Rey, one Champions League, one Super Cup and one Club World Cup during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu. body check tags ::
