Liverpool are reportedly poised to trigger Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain's £30m release clause this month.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is thought to be a fan of the Argentine and had made plans to activate his buyout clause in the summer.
However, according to The Express, Rodgers will look to bolster his striking options before the end of January by signing the former Real Madrid man.
The report goes on to state that coach Rafael Benitez will offload Higuain in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, having signed striker Manolo Gabbiadini for £11m this month.
Liverpool strikers Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli have netted one Premier League goal between them so far this season.
