Joel Matip could remain in the Premier League next season, with two Premier League clubs looking to secure the signature of the veteran defender in the upcoming transfer window, according to a report.
The 32-year-old, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in December, bid farewell to the Anfield faithful last weekend following the Reds' victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Matip spent eight seasons with Liverpool and played a key role in the heart of their defence, helping the side earn their first league title in 30 years back in 2020.
The Cameroonian arrived in Anfield from Schalke 04 and was one of Jurgen Klopp's very first signings after the German joined the Reds from Borussia Dortmund in 2015.
Premier League sides eyeing up summer move for Joel Matip
Matip will be a free agent as of next month when his contract with the Reds expires, and while a move away from England originally looked likely, it seems the defender could be set to remain in the Premier League for a while longer.
According to The Sun, Bournemouth, who finished 12th in the league standings this season, are considering a move for the 32-year-old once his current deal with the Reds concludes.
The report adds that Andoni Iraola has pinpointed the player as a top transfer target, confident that he can elevate his Cherries team to new heights.
In addition, it is understood that Southampton are also keeping tabs on Matip as they look to return to the top flight at the first time of asking.
The Saints finished fourth in the Championship this season and after beating West Bromwich Albion last week, they now have a date with Leeds United in the playoff final at Wembley this weekend.
Will Matip pass up European football to remain in the Premier League?
Still, it remains to be seen if Matip will opt to remain in England next term, with interest being shown by the likes of Roma, who can also offer the defender European football next term.
Liverpool, meanwhile, now under the guidance of Arne Slot, are expected to be busy in the upcoming transfer window with Ousmane Diomande and Goncalo Inacio among the players they are believed to be considering as Matip's long-term replacement.
The Cameroon international made a total of 201 appearances for the Reds and scored 11 goals during his tenure at Anfield.
