Mainz 05 have confirmed the signing of Fabian Frei from Basel on a four-year deal.
The Bundesliga club announced the arrival of the midfielder on the same day that Johannes Geis completed his move to Schalke 04, and the 26-year-old is believed to have cost them close to €10m (£7.1m).
"Fabian Frei soon caught our eye as our preferred player for a position in the centre of our midfield if we were to make any changes," Mainz's general manager Christian Heidel said on his club's website.
"We're getting a gifted player, both defensively and attacking, who is strong and very experienced with strategic qualities and a very good vision of the game."
Frei won five Swiss titles during his time with Basel.
