Manchester City's five trips to Spain

Ahead of their match against Barcelona tonight, Sports Mole looks back on Manchester City's five previous trips to Spain.

Tonight, Manchester City will need to overturn a 2-0 deficit during their trip to Barcelona if they are to remain in this season's Champions League.

The Citizens have turned out in Spain on five previous occasions, winning just once and losing three times.

So, ahead of this evening's meeting in the Camp Nou, Sports Mole looks back on City's quintet of encounters in the Southern European country.

1. Athletic Bilbao 3-3 Man City, 1969

City got off to a slow start against Bilbao, falling 2-0 behind within the opening 12 minutes courtesy of goals from Jose Argoitia and Javier Clemente. Neil Young reduced the arrears three minutes before the break, but Fidel Uriarte restored the home team's two-goal advantage with 57 minutes played. However, City responded late on thanks to a strike from Tommy Booth and an own goal by Bilbao defender Luis Echeberria. Back in Manchester, City won 3-0 to book their place in the second round of the Cup Winners' Cup.

2. Valencia 2-1 Man City, 1972

Having played out a 2-2 draw at Maine Road, City exited the UEFA Cup at the hands of Los Ches. The hosts broke the deadlock with 71 minutes on the clock through Ruben Valdez, before Quino doubled the lead soon after. Rodney Marsh pulled one back for City in the 89th minute, but it failed to inspire a comeback as Alfredo di Stefano's team progressed through to round two.

3. Racing Santander 3-1 Man City, 2008

Mark Hughes's team may have still finished top of their UEFA Cup group despite this defeat, but he couldn't escape the fact that it was an extremely poor performance from his team. An error from Kasper Schmeichel allowed Jonathan Pereira to score in the 20th minute and Racing would take a 2-0 lead into the interval when Oscar Serrano struck into the bottom corner of the net. Juan Valera added a third after the restart, which rendered Felipe Caicedo's late goal a consolation.

4. Villarreal 0-3 Man City, 2011

City put their Champions League group stage fate in their own hands with a resounding win at the Estadio El Madrigal. First-half goals from Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli put Roberto Mancini's men in the ascendancy. Ivorian midfielder Toure then scored his second and City's third of the night in the 71st minute, which sent the Premier League side up to second in the standings. However, they still failed to qualify for the knockout stages.

5. Real Madrid 3-2 Man City, 2012

Quite how City lost this encounter, they probably still don't know. Edin Dzeko scored the first goal of the contest with 68 minutes played, but that was cancelled out by Madrid full-back Marcelo. With five minutes left to play, Aleksandar Kolarov restored City's lead, but again Los Blancos responded through Karim Benzema. Then, in the final minute, former Manchester United attacker Cristiano Ronaldo fired in the winning goal from the edge of the area.
