Pep Guardiola "concerned" about Wigan Athletic test in FA Cup

Pep Guardiola hints that he will name a strong starting lineup for quadruple-chasing Manchester City's fifth-round tie at Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted that he is wary of an FA Cup upset when his side travel to Wigan Athletic in the last 16.

The Citizens head to the DW Stadium on Monday night aiming to remain on course for silverware on four fronts this season, having lost just two games in all competitions so far.

Guardiola's men were handed a favourable draw for the fifth round, although they have bad memories of this fixture as they were famously beaten by Wigan in the 2013 final, as well as in the quarter-finals a year later.

With that in mind, plus the Latics' 3-0 win over Bournemouth in last month's third-round replay, the Catalan coach is not expecting an easy game and is likely to go with a strong starting lineup.

"Of course, I am concerned because I saw the game against Bournemouth," he told reporters at his pre-match press conference. "Bournemouth for me are one of the teams I like to watch the most in the Premier League and they were able to beat them. I think in the FA Cup every season there are a lot of surprises. Not just this season and last season but throughout history.

"It would be good if the players do not think too much about the [EFL Cup] final next Sunday; they think about the final [against Wigan] next Monday. It is one game and a chance to go to the quarter-finals. We are going to prepare as good as possible for this game.

"The Basel game was a winning game, we have six days or so and until next Sunday we have five or six days, too. They can recover. When the distance is two or three days after we have to take a look at the condition of the team. The players are feeling well. We will see what our decisions are after the training sessions."

Guardiola also revealed that Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus is now back in training, seven weeks on from suffering medial ligament damage.
