Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admits that his side "didn't play well enough" against Newcastle United in the 2-0 League Cup defeat on Wednesday.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted that his side "didn't play well enough" against Newcastle United in this evening's 2-0 League Cup defeat at the Etihad.

Rolando Aarons opened the scoring for the Magpies in the sixth minute, before Moussa Sissoko sealed the victory with his side's second goal midway through the second half.

Pellegrini told reporters after the game: "We didn't play well enough - we conceded two easy goals and didn't take our chances to score.

"The team ran a lot, tried to do things better but we couldn't because we're not in a good moment. I think Newcastle deserved to win, although we had four or five chances to score.

"It's difficult to say what happened but must recover our trust as a team. We will continue to try to recover ahead of the derby."

Man City host rivals Manchester United in the Premier League this Sunday.
