Pep Guardiola confirms imminent Manchester City contract talks

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola confirms that he will hold talks over a new deal at the Etihad next year, with his current contract due to expire in 2023.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that he will sit down with the club to discuss a new contract at the end of the season.

The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss has now entered the final year of his existing deal at the Etihad Stadium, which would see him depart after seven years at the helm.

Guardiola has achieved unprecedented success at Man City since taking over from Manuel Pellegrini in 2016 and enters the 2022-23 season seeking to win his fifth Premier League title as a manager.

The 51-year-old has also confirmed that he would be keen to stay on at the club beyond the end of his current contract, but he does not want to be a burden if a downward spiral occurs.

"I wouldn't change my life here one second. We spoke with the club. In the middle of the season, end of the season, we will talk again about how we feel and decide what's best for the club," Guardiola told reporters at Friday's press conference.

"I said many times if they want it I'd like to stay longer but at the same time I have to be sure. It's not the second or third season, it's many years already and I have to see how the players behave.

'I don't want to be a problem, sometimes when you extend things and you force it it's not good so you have to go through it and relax, and this kind of situation happens when it's going to happen in a natural way.

"If you force it it's not going well. We will see what happens during the season and how we feel and the best decision for the club is going to be taken."

As well as securing four Premier League crowns, Guardiola has also won the FA Cup, four EFL Cups and two Community Shields since his arrival in Manchester.

However, the Catalan coach is still waiting to taste success in the Champions League with the Sky Blues, and they suffered a 3-1 loss to Liverpool in this year's Community Shield.

Defeat at the King Power marked Guardiola's 53rd loss from 352 games in charge of Man City, who have won a further 260 matches and drawn 39 under his tutelage.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Man City were potentially considering Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as Guardiola's successor should the Citizens coach not stay beyond 2023.

Arteta learned his trade as Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad before leaving for Arsenal in 2019, where he has won the FA Cup and Community Shield during his short time in charge.

However, City's hopes of prising Arteta away from Arsenal next year have taken a hit after the 40-year-old agreed a new deal at the Emirates Stadium until 2025 earlier this year.

City will begin the defence of their Premier League crown against West Ham United on Sunday, and Guardiola also commented on the future of Bernardo Silva at his pre-game press conference. body check tags ::
