Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has backed Santiago Vergini to impress in defence ahead of Wednesday's trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City.
Vergini is expected to start in defence as Poyet looks to fill the void created by Wes Brown's red card in the loss to Hull City on Saturday.
"I am convinced Santiago is ready," the Black Cats manager told reporters.
"He has been waiting for his chance and he won't let us down although I am sure he is surprised it has come around.
"But the way they play, it is easier for defenders to adapt. He is good in the air and sees danger early."
Vergini will remain on loan at the club until the end of the season.
