Manchester City break several Premier League records in a 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Manchester City have broken several Premier League records thanks to their 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Citizens' routine victory over the Seagulls has edged them to 97 points, breaking the record of 95 points set by Chelsea at the end of the 2004-05 campaign.

In addition, the champions have now won 31 league games this term, overtaking the tally of 30 set by Antonio Conte's Blues last season and equalling the all-time English top-flight record set by Tottenham Hotspur's double-winning side in 1960-61.

Strikes from Danilo, Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho helped Pep Guardiola's side move to 105 league goals for the campaign, beating the 102-goal record set by Chelsea during the 2009-10 season.

The game was also a special occasion for the departing Yaya Toure, who was named in the starting XI and given the captain's armband in his final appearance for the team on home turf.

Man City began brightly and took the lead on 16 minutes when a Leroy Sane-led counter-attack culminated in the ball being worked to Danilo, who rifled a near effort into the bottom corner.

Brighton were level just four minutes level, however, Claudio Bravo mistiming his run off the line as he sought to deny Davy Propper on the right, only for the Dutchman to loft the ball towards the centre, where Leonardo Ulloa was on hand to nod home into an empty net.

However, such was City's quality up front that they were deservedly ahead in the 34th minute after a lengthy spell of pressure, Sane once again instrumental in surging down the left before setting up Silva to half-volley beyond the reach of Mathew Ryan.

Bravo risked gifting the Seagulls another goal just before the hour mark, the Chilean fumbling Jose Izquierdo's shot in the box, but the Citizens were let off as Anthony Knockaert inexplicably skied over the bar with the goal gaping.

The game was put beyond the reach of Chris Hughton's side on 72 minutes, the impressive Sane claiming a hat-trick of assists by cutting the ball back towards the middle to Fernandinho, who made no mistake with a clinical first-time strike.

Brighton struggled to withstand the barrage of attacking football from the high-quality hosts, although they were at least able to stop Toure from claiming a swansong goal in front of the City faithful, the Ivorian making way in the 86th minute to a standing ovation by the home crowd.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Bravo; Danilo, Kompany, Laporte, Zinchenko (Mendy 76'); Fernandinho, Toure (Nmecha 86'), Gundogan; Silva, Jesus (Diaz 83'), Sane

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION (4-4-2): Ryan; Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Knockaert, Propper, Stephens, Izquierdo (March 79'); Gross (Kayal 73'), Ulloa (Locadia 73')
