Newcastle United have reportedly contacted Manchester City over the availability of centre-back Eliaquim Mangala.
The Frenchman has fallen under the radar at the Etihad behind first-choice defenders John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany.
Pep Guardiola is also expected to sign Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte before the close of the transfer window, meaning that Mangala could become surplus to requirements in Manchester.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle will swoop for the 26-year-old on loan to provide backup as the Magpies look to secure their Premier League status.
The newspaper adds that City would want Newcastle to pay the majority of Mangala's current £80,000 wage as part of the deal.
