Crystal Palace cause a Carling Cup upset by beating Manchester United 2-1 after extra time at Old Trafford.

Crystal Palace have booked their place in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup with a shock 2-1 win after extra time against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Championship side started much the brighter, with Wilfried Zaha causing the home side a number of problems.

The forward had a penalty shout turned down in the first half when he appeared to be brought down by Fabio. However, referee Chris Foy waved away the Palace appeals.

For all of their pressing in the opening 45 minutes, the visitors were unable to breach the United defence, while the home side lacked any creativity up front.

The hosts were much livelier after the interval, and Antonio Valencia should have put them ahead, but his shot edged inches wide of the post.

Substitute Ravel Morrison had a good chance to give the Premier League champions the lead, but his shot was saved at the feet of Palace goalkeeper Lewis Price.

Dougie Freedman's side eventually took the lead in style when Darren Ambrose lashed in from 35 yards just after the hour.

However, United were level three minutes later when Federico Macheda scored from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the area by Paddy McCarthy.

The away team continued to have most of the possession after they conceded the equaliser, and some shaky United defending allowed Glenn Murray to have a shot on goal in the dying minutes, but his effort hit the sidenetting from a tight angle.

As the match went into extra time, the hosts had the best of the early play, but Palace regained the lead seven minutes into the first period when Murray angled his header past Ben Amos from a free kick.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side put pressure on the Championship side as the clock ticked down, but some dogged Palace defending secured a famous win.
