Michael Owen: 'Manchester United of old would have qualified by now'

Michael Owen believes that old Manchester United teams would have had no problem reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League against the club's current opposition.

Michael Owen has claimed that the Manchester United of old would have blown their group away to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League.

The Red Devils have left themselves in a dangerous situation heading into the final round of fixtures in the group stage after failing to beat PSV Eindhoven in their clash at Old Trafford, which has left them needing a win against Wolfsburg to advance to the last 16.

Owen believes that United teams of old would have had no problem qualifying from the group, highlighting the club's struggles in front of goal this season.

He told BT Sport: "It's not the greatest of groups. The Manchester United of old would blow that group away. We would have qualified after four games.

"It is the story of their season, the majority of the time they have played like that and have managed to knick a goal, a 1-0 here and a 1-0 there.

"They've improved over recent weeks, but only two good performances in general that has been the state of affairs. It's amazing that they are still in with a shout of qualifying and flying high in the Premier League."

United are second in Group B with eight points after five matches.
