Analysing West Ham United's Premier League run-in

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the fixtures West Ham United will have to play if the 2019-20 Premier League season resumes.

Should the 2019-20 Premier League season be allowed to safely resume, West Ham United will certainly have a battle on their hands when it comes to staying up.

Indeed, the Hammers have struggled for long spells of the campaign and currently sit 16th in the table, only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference, while 19th-placed Aston Villa have a game in hand over the capital club.

David Moyes's side have won just seven of their 29 league fixtures this term and will need to put together a strong run of results in their final nine matches if they are to secure their status as a top-flight club for the 2020-21 campaign.

The coronavirus pandemic could yet see the season called off altogether, but there is a general feeling that the campaign will be completed in the coming months.

Here, Sports Mole has taken an in-depth look at West Ham's remaining nine fixtures.

It is currently unclear how the 2019-20 season might resume in terms of format, meaning that the order of matches for West Ham is not particularly important at this stage, at least until a final decision has been made.

There is no question that the Hammers have some incredibly difficult fixtures on paper, though, namely taking on Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United in three of their final nine games of the campaign.

Spurs secured a 3-2 victory when the two teams met at the London Stadium earlier this season, but West Ham did record a 1-0 victory away to their bitter rivals last term, and it would be fair to say that Jose Mourinho's side were not in the best of form before football was called to a halt.

Chelsea are currently fourth in the table and would also provide tough opposition, but the Hammers ran out 1-0 winners at Stamford Bridge earlier this season and would have home advantage in that particular clash.

As mentioned, Moyes's side are also due to travel to Old Trafford to take on Man United, who recorded a 2-1 victory in the corresponding game last term. West Ham ran out 2-0 winners at the London Stadium back in September, but they have not beaten the Red Devils away from home in the Premier League for 13 years.

West Ham must also take on Wolverhampton Wanderers before the end of the season; Nuno Espirito Santo's side have ambitions of making the top four, therefore presenting another very difficult task for the Hammers, particularly considering Wolves have won the last three Premier League meetings.

Burnley at home is also among the London side's remaining fixtures; West Ham did run out 4-2 winners over the Clarets when they last met at the London Stadium in November 2018, although Sean Dyche's side have been strong on their travels this term, picking up 16 points, which is actually more than Tottenham and Arsenal, and the same as Man United.

West Ham's final four opponents are all in the bottom half of the table; two of those are in the bottom three, with Aston Villa due to travel to the London Stadium, while Norwich City will welcome the Hammers to Carrow Road.

Villa and Norwich have won just nine Premier League games between them this season, though, while Dean Smith's side have picked up just two victories on their travels, suggesting that the Hammers will be the huge favourites.

Moyes's side will also face a trip to Newcastle United should the season resume. The Magpies have only won four home Premier League matches this season, but they ran out 3-2 winners at the London Stadium earlier this term and had won their last two matches before football was called to a halt.

Watford at home would also be a huge match for the Hammers, with Nigel Pearson's side sitting 17th in the table, level on points with the capital side. West Ham have actually won three of their last four Premier League matches with the Hornets, though, including a 3-1 success earlier this season.

The average overall position for West Ham's remaining opponents is 11th. Meanwhile, the average position of the teams still to visit the London Stadium is 11th, and the average of those the Hammers must still visit themselves is 11th-12th, suggesting that there is little advantage in terms of home and away games.

Moyes's side have the third-worst home record in the Premier League this season with 15 points from their 14 matches, while they have the seventh-worst record on the road, picking up 12 points from their 15 fixtures, recording just three wins in the process.
