With the Premier League season on hold until at least the end of April, it gives football fans a chance to cast their minds back over what has been a remarkable 2019-20 campaign so far.

Liverpool have set new standards in the top flight, winning 27 of their 29 games and dropping just five points along the way to build a 25-point lead over reigning champions Manchester City.

When - or rather if - the season resumes then Jurgen Klopp's side will be just six points away from being crowned kings of England for the first time in 30 years, but further down the standings there is a lot more to be decided.

Inconsistency has been the theme of the top-four race; Chelsea currently occupy fourth, but Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, surprise package Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal will all still consider themselves in the mix too.

Relegation also remains up in the air with only two points separating 16th place from 19th, and rock-bottom Norwich City not entirely dead and buried just yet either.

Here, Sports Mole selects its Premier League team of the season so far.

Unsurprisingly, Liverpool dominate this team with nine of the 11 players, but that is not to say that others have not been hugely impressive in certain areas of the field too.

Goalkeeper is a case in point, with Alisson Becker getting the gloves but Dean Henderson, Nick Pope and Kasper Schmeichel all deserving of mentions. Henderson is perhaps the closest to challenging Alisson, and for good reason too - he has kept as many clean sheets as well as making more saves, punches and high claims.

However, Alisson has conceded just 11 goals in his 20 Premier League outings this season - half as many as Henderson has shipped - while he also has a better save percentage to prove that his record is not solely down to playing behind a better defence. Pope has kept more clean sheets that both, incidentally, but he has also conceded 40 goals.

Liverpool's shot-stopper has saved the Reds on a number of occasions this season, but there is no doubt that those in front of him contribute towards the best defensive record in the division too.

Virgil van Dijk has perhaps not quite matched his form from last season throughout the 2019-20 campaign so far, but he remains the standard-bearer in the Premier League. No defender has scored more goals and no player has played more passes - almost 500 more than Man City's Rodri - while Liverpool have kept 12 clean sheets with him in the team.

Van Dijk's best performances have undoubtedly come with Joe Gomez alongside him too; injuries have limited the England international to only 19 appearances in the league, but from those he has kept 10 clean sheets, while Liverpool have conceded just five goals while he has been on the field.

There is also very little competition when it comes to the full-backs, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson excelling once again this season and further enhancing their reputation as arguably the best in their positions in world football.

The duo lead the way when it comes to assists for defenders this season - Alexander-Arnold with 12 and Robertson with seven - while Alexander-Arnold also boasts the most touches out of any player in the Premier League this term.

Indeed, the only player who can beat Alexander-Arnold when it comes to assists in general is Kevin De Bruyne and, while his Man City side have fallen well short of Liverpool's pace this campaign, the Belgian has maintained his own high level of performance to earn his spot as one of only two non-Liverpool players.

De Bruyne has directly contributed to a league-high 25 goals in the top flight, scoring eight and creating a further 17, and it is therefore an easy decision to have him on the right of the midfield trio and pushing Jordan Henderson back into a deeper role.

It is a role which the Liverpool skipper has fulfilled on numerous occasions already this term due to Fabinho's injuries, and no matter where he is on the field Henderson will always guarantee you a fully committed display. The previously-maligned midfielder is one of the front-runners for the PFA Player of the Year award this season, and his importance to Liverpool was further highlighted during his recent absence.

Georginio Wijnaldum has been similarly important in keeping things ticking over at the heart of Liverpool's midfield, missing just one Premier League game this season and boasting a pass completion rate of 91%.

There would be no problem when it comes to goals in this team, with the front three having directly contributed to 68 between them in the Premier League this season - 23 apiece for Jamie Vardy and Sadio Mane, with Mohamed Salah just one behind.

Vardy leads the way in the goalscoring stakes with 19 and, while others may boast a better goals-per-game ratio - largely due to the drought which the former England man finally ended before play was suspended - he does still have better shot accuracy and shooting success rate than other contenders such as Sergio Aguero, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Roberto Firmino.

Mane and Salah have once again been key for Liverpool this season too; no duo has combined for as many goals as that pair, and in terms of winning goals they lead the way too - Salah has a league-high seven, while Mane and Firmino are one behind with six apiece.
