Arsenal team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Manchester United

Sports Mole rounds up Arsenal's latest injury and suspension news ahead of their New Year's Day showdown with Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal will be hoping that 2020 treats them better than 2019 when they host Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on New Year's Day.

The Gunners ended the year on a run of just one win in their last 15 games across all competitions, culminating in a dramatic late collapse to lose to Chelsea last time out.

The result leaves Mikel Arteta still searching for his first win in charge of the club, while they begin the New Year sitting 12th in the table and 11 points adrift of the Champions League places.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Arsenal's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the contest.

Granit Xhaka

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Illness
Possible return date: January 1 (vs. Man Utd)

Arteta insisted that Granit Xhaka missed the Chelsea game through illness and he remains a doubt for this one, particularly with speculation continuing to swirl around his future beyond the January transfer window.

Calum Chambers

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Calum Chambers lasted only 23 minutes of the defeat to Chelsea before limping off with a knee injury and, while the severity of the issue has not yet been confirmed, the signs did not look positive for the defender.

Gabriel Martinelli

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: January 1 (vs. Man Utd)

Gabriel Martinelli missed out against Chelsea as he continues to nurse a hamstring issue, which will be assessed further in the buildup to the visit of United.

Dani Ceballos

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: January 1 (vs. Man Utd)

Another who fell just short of returning in time for Chelsea, Dani Ceballos will undergo a late fitness test having now returned to full training following a hamstring injury.

Rob Holding

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: January 1 (vs. Manchester United)

Rob Holding has been limited to just one Premier League appearance all season due to a couple of injuries, the latest of which has kept him out for almost two months now. A return is not far away, though, and there is an outside chance he could be ready for United.

Sead Kolasinac

Status: Out
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: Unknown

Arsenal are hopeful that Sead Kolasinac will return to training at some point in January, but this match will come too soon for the full-back, who sustained ankle ligament damage in December.

Hector Bellerin

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Thigh
Possible return date: January 1 (vs. Man Utd)

The hamstring issue which forced Hector Bellerin out in the warm-up against West Ham United earlier this month has proven to be more serious than first feared, although there is a chance he could be involved in some capacity when United come to town.

Kieran Tierney

Status: Out
Type of injury: Shoulder
Possible return date: Unknown

Kieran Tierney still faces at least a couple more months on the sidelines, having initially been ruled out for three months after dislocating his shoulder against West Ham.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos

Status: Out
Type of injury: Head
Possible return date: January 6 (vs. Leeds United)

Sokratis Papastathopoulos sustained concussion during the Boxing Day draw with Bournemouth and, as per the protocols, is therefore expected to miss this match with a week usually given to recover from such injuries.

ARSENAL'S SUSPENSION LIST

Arsenal have no players suspended for this match.
