Manchester United have revealed that Casemiro is facing 'several weeks' on the sidelines with the hamstring problem which he picked up against Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
The 31-year-old was replaced at the interval of his side's EFL Cup contest with the Magpies, with Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag revealing after the match that the midfielder had picked up an injury.
A statement from Man United has now revealed that the Brazil international will be out of action for 'several weeks', suggesting that he could potentially be absent for the remainder of the year.
"Casemiro will be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury suffered during our Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday," read a statement on the club's official website.
"The Brazilian midfielder was withdrawn at half-time due to the issue, and subsequent assessment has revealed a strain that will keep him out for a number of weeks."
Casemiro is Man United's leading goalscorer this season, finding the back of the net on four occasions in 12 appearances, in addition to registering one assist.
The midfielder was recently unavailable for two Premier League matches against Sheffield United and Manchester City due to an injury which he suffered while representing Brazil in October.
Casemiro was also missing against Copenhagen in the Champions League last week, although he would have absent for that fixture regardless of his fitness status due to a European suspension.
The Brazilian has another three years left to run on his contract at Old Trafford, but there is currently speculation surrounding his future due to an indifferent start to the season.
Man United also currently still have Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, Raphael Varane was missing against Newcastle on Wednesday due to illness, and Jadon Sancho is still not in the first-team picture due to his falling-out with Ten Hag.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, though, made his return from a hamstring problem last time out and is now in contention to start against Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.
There will be major pressure on Ten Hag to deliver a positive result at Craven Cottage amid suggestions that he could lose his job if the team's poor results continue.
Man United have lost their last two matches against Manchester City and Newcastle, but they had been on a three-game winning run ahead of the Manchester derby last weekend. body check tags ::
