Manchester United's Scott McTominay could reportedly be on the sidelines for the next eight weeks with the knee problem that he picked up on Boxing Day.

Manchester United are reportedly fearful that Scott McTominay could be on the sidelines for the next eight weeks with the knee problem that he picked up against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

McTominay was forced off at the interval of the clash with the Magpies and was not involved in United's 2-0 win over Burnley on Saturday night.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told reporters after the match at Turf Moor that the Scotland international was likely to be out of action for the next three or four weeks.

However, according to the Daily Mail, scans revealed that the 23-year-old had injured knee ligaments, meaning that he could be on the sidelines for the next eight weeks, missing a string of important fixtures in the process.

McTominay has developed into a key player for the 20-time English champions this season, making 21 appearances in all competitions.

The Red Devils have struggled for consistency this season but are just four points off fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table ahead of their trip to Arsenal on New Year's Day.

Paul Pogba is expected to be available for the clash at the Emirates Stadium, having been rested for the trip to Burnley due to fatigue.
