Erik ten Hag reveals Mason Mount return date after latest injury

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is hopeful that Mason Mount will be available for selection against Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The England international has struggled with a number of fitness problems during his first season with the Red Devils, being restricted to just 17 appearances in all competitions.

Mount recently returned from a lengthy absence, getting his name on the scoresheet on his comeback appearance against Brentford at the end of March.

However, the 25-year-old has been absent from the last two squads against Coventry City and Sheffield United due to an unspecified issue.

There had been fears that the playmaker was set for another lengthy absence, but Ten Hag has said that the recent arrival from Chelsea is in line to feature against Burnley.

"No, not yet. We have to be patient for it," the Dutchman replied to BBC Sport. "For coming back for the game against Burnley, I don't expect [them]. Mason Mount, he will return, I think."

Mount has only played 12 times in the Premier League this season, while he has featured only once in the FA Cup but will hope to be available for the final against Manchester City at the end of next month.

Man United are again set to be without a number of players this weekend, though, with Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans, Raphael Varane, Marcus Rashford and Willy Kambwala all set to remain on the sidelines.

Man United twice came from behind to beat Sheffield United 4-2 in the league on Wednesday night, and there was a first-team debut for 18-year-old Ethan Wheatley in the latter stages of the contest.

Wheatley became the 250th player to graduate from the famous Man United academy when he took to the field against the Blades at Old Trafford.

"It's a great club with a massive history, especially in the academy as well. It's just an honour to make my debut. And then that number 250 is just a little extra as well," he told MUTV.

"Adam Lawrence, Colin Little, like all of the staff really, even the analysts: they've all helped me throughout the whole season.

"Last season it was a bit stop-start. I didn't really get to develop as much as I wanted. This season I've been able to stay on the pitch and work on using my body, all these little technical bits as well, and I was talking to the coaches before the game.

"I feel like everything just came into place these last few weeks, and I'm feeling a lot more confident with the way I'm playing."

Wheatley scored twice for Manchester United Under-18s against Manchester City Under-18s in the Premier League Cup final on Tuesday night to secure a 2-1 win for his side, and he will now be bidding to keep his spot in the first-team squad for the clash against Burnley.
