Paul Clement: "Manchester United deserved to win"

Paul Clement confesses that he can have no complaints over the manner of Swansea City's defeat to Manchester United following some 'disappointing' defending.

Paul Clement has admitted that he is "disappointed" with the manner of Swansea City's defending and concedes that his side were second best against Manchester United.

The Red Devils progressed through to the last eight of the EFL Cup thanks to a couple of Jesse Lingard goals, both of which Clement felt his side should have dealt with.

Swansea have now won just two of their last eight games in all competitions, losing five of those, but the former Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid coach insists that there can be no complaints with the nature of his side's latest setback, even if they could have done better defensively.

"The first goal is disappointing from a defensive point of view," he told Sky Sports News. "We had the ball, gave it away in a bad area, and then we were exposed. Lovely little ball around the corner and a good finish.

"I'm disappointed with the second goal also, because I wouldn't say Lingard is well known for getting into the box and heading it, and our two centre-halves are in there, so we have to do better there.

"But we played some good football at times, we had our fair share of chances, but Manchester United deserved to win. The feeling after the game is never good after you've lost, and we played better than we have been, but they've got real quality. They deserve to win the game, no question.

"They are a squad full of talent, some on show from the start in [Anthony] Martial, [Marcus] Rashford, and then subs coming in with [Romelu] Lukaku, [Nemanja] Matic, but my players gave a good account of ourselves, good effort, and we have to believe we can pick up some good results in the near future, and keep working at getting better performances."

Swansea head to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, looking to put some distance between themselves and the dropzone.
