Bayern Munich's top five wins over English clubs

Ahead of their meeting with Arsenal, Sports Mole looks back over five of Bayern Munich's most impressive wins over clubs from England.

Bayern Munich have faced English opposition on 47 occasions, including six meetings with tomorrow's Champions League opponents Arsenal.

The Germans have won 15 of those clashes, as well as a further three against the Gunners.

Ahead of their match at the Emirates Stadium, Sports Mole has picked out five of Bayern's most memorable wins over sides from English shores.

1. Bayern 2-0 Leeds United, May 1975
A season that had started with Brian Clough telling the Leeds United players to throw their medals into the bin because, in his opinion, they had won them under Don Revie by cheating, ended with Jimmy Armfield guiding the club to the final of the 1975 European Cup in Paris. Goals from Franz Roth and Gerd Muller ensured that Bayern retained the trophy, but the Leeds players felt that a number of decisions from referee Michel Kitabdjian and his assistants had gone against them. So disgusted were they that while the Bayern players celebrated, the majority of the Leeds team left their medals in the dressing room.

2. Nottingham Forest 1-5 Bayern, March 1996
An away goal from Steve Chettle kept Forest in contention despite a 2-1 defeat during the first leg of this UEFA Cup quarter-final, but in the return match at the City Ground, the hosts were blown away. Christian Ziege, Jurgen Klinsmann and Jean-Pierre Papin were all among the goals as the German club ran out 5-1 winners, wrapping up a 7-2 aggregate success. Steve Stone scored the only goal of the game for the Tricky Trees.

3. Bayern 2-1 Manchester United, April 2001
Revenge was firmly in the mind of the Bayern team, who were beaten by United to the Champions League trophy in such dramatic circumstances two years earlier. They won the first leg at Old Trafford 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Paulo Sergio, but in the second meeting, the hosts were even more impressive as goals from Giovane Elber and Mehmet Scholl put them in a commanding position. It meant that Ryan Giggs's second-half effort was rendered as a mere consolation. Consequently, eventual champions Bayern advanced through to the last four of competition.

4. Arsenal 1-3 Bayern, February 2013
Although nobody knew it at the time, Bayern were on their way to a treble of trophies when they visited Arsenal in the round of 16 last season. The Gunners could not contend with the German side's mixture of power and pace as they raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller. Lukas Podolski gave Arsenal some hope shortly after the restart when he reduced the arrears, but Mario Mandzukic scored in the closing stages to restore Bayern's two-goal advantage. The Londoners won the second leg in the Allianz Arena 2-0, but it was Bayern that advanced on the away goals rule.

5. Manchester City 1-3 Bayern, October 2013
Pep Guardiola's version of Bayern showed that they were just as effective as Jupp Heynckes's by swatting aside City at the Etihad Stadium earlier this term. The Champions League holders had 66% of the possession as goals from Franck Ribery, Muller and former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben put their side in the ascendancy. Alvaro Negredo pulled one back for the home team 11 minutes from the end, but the damage had already been done.
