Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for two matches and fined £50,000 by the Football Association for his conduct following Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League in April.

The 37-year-old played the full 90 minutes of the clash at Goodison Park, which was decided by a first-half effort from Anthony Gordon.

At the end of the match, while walking down the tunnel, Ronaldo knocked a fan's mobile phone to the ground when it was thrust towards him.

The Portugal international apologised on social media after the incident and accepted a police caution, but he has now been handed punishment by the FA following an investigation.

"It's never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing. Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game," he wrote on Instagram after the incident.

"I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship."

Ronaldo will have to pay a £50,000 fine, while he has been suspended for two matches, should he play in the Premier League ever again.

On Monday, it was announced that the forward's contract at Man United had been terminated, with the club deciding to release him following the explosive interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

"Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for two matches, fined £50,000 and warned as to his future conduct for a breach of FA Rule E3," read a statement from the FA.

"The forward admitted that his conduct after the final whistle of the Premier League game between Manchester United FC and Everton FC on Saturday 9 April 2022 was improper.

"An independent Regulatory Commission found that his conduct was both improper and violent during a subsequent hearing, and imposed these sanctions."

Newcastle United have recently been credited with an interest in the attacker, who is currently with the Portugal squad at the 2022 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are another English club said to be considering a move for Ronaldo, with the former Sporting Lisbon youngster able to join a new club with a view to playing from January.

Ronaldo has only scored three times in 16 appearances for Man United this season, with his only Premier League goal in 2022-23 coming against Everton last month. body check tags ::
