Manchester United suffer their worst month in 94 years after losing 2-0 to Newcastle United in their final outing of 2024.

Manchester United have suffered their worst month in 94 years after they fell to a 2-0 defeat in Monday's home clash with Newcastle United.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton both found the net in the opening 20 minutes, with their efforts proving enough to condemn Man United to three consecutive league home defeats for the first time in 1962-63.

To make matters worse, the result represented a third straight Premier League defeat without troubling the scorers after previously losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 2-0 in their away game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Unfortunately for Ruben Amorim, he has taken just seven points from his first seven league games as Man United head coach.

Man United experience worst month in 94 years

Amorim has also overseen Man United's worst month in 94 years, having watched his side lose six of their eight competitive matches in December (W2).

That is the most games that Man United have lost in a single month since they suffered seven competitive defeats in September 1930.

The Red Devils let in 18 goals during the course of December 2024 - the most that they have conceded in a single month since March 1964.

They shipped 13 of those goals in their seven Premier League games in December, representing half of their total goals conceded in the top flight this season.

Should Man United be worried about relegation?

Man United have been competing in the top flight for the last 49 years, so it is nearly unthinkable to consider the Red Devils as a potential relegation candidate.

They are in no immediate danger of the drop, with their 22-point tally leaving them in 14th place and seven points above the bottom three.

However, they may be concerned by the fact that four teams in who were in 14th place at the turn of the year have been relegated in the Premier League era, including Newcastle United, Burnley and Norwich City.

Most recently, Leeds United were relegated in the 2022-23 season after entering the new year in 14th position in the Premier League table.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils, matters will not get easier as they now turn their focus to a difficult test against rivals and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Amorim's side will travel to Anfield on Sunday with hopes of claiming their first win since beating Manchester City in the derby on December 15. body check tags ::
