Dermot Gallagher: 'Late Everton goal correctly disallowed'

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher claims that it was the right decision to disallow Everton's late goal against Manchester United.

Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher has claimed that VAR correctly ruled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's last-gasp goal for Everton against Manchester United.

With the scoreline at 1-1, the Toffees thought that they had found a winner when Calvert-Lewin's shot took two deflections before finding the bottom corner.

However, despite replays suggesting that David de Gea's line of sight was not hindered by Gylfi Sigurdsson, who was sitting in an offside position, Gallagher felt that the offside law had been applied correctly.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Gallagher said: "I think it was right, but a lot of people don't. When you see the angle from behind, when the ball is struck, he's completely in the line of De Gea. The goalkeeper thinks he has to set himself for the ball to come completely through the line of Sigurdsson.

"As it is, it hits [Harry] Maguire, but as the ball rolls on he's quite clearly in his line of vision. Anyone watching the game knowing the laws would have to say it's offside.

"I've listened to loads of people about this in the last 24 hours, but when you see it, that's what John Moss has seen. That evidence falls into the in line of vision, he's in line of De Gea, he's in the six-yard box, he could not be in a worse position for that ball to be played."

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti was shown a red card for his reaction to the decision, which has subsequently led to the Italian being charged by the Football Association.
