Harry Maguire has reportedly been left "unhappy and angry" after being stripped of the Manchester United captaincy by Red Devils head coach Erik ten Hag.

The England international was informed on Sunday that he was no longer the club's captain, with Ten Hag preparing to appoint a new skipper for the 2023-24 campaign.

Bruno Fernandes is widely expected to be given the armband on a permanent basis, having been captain when Maguire was not in the team last season.

Casemiro and Raphael Varane are also believed to be options, but Fernandes is set to be named the permanent skipper in the not too distant future.

In a statement on social media, Maguire said: "I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt."

However, the 30-year-old is widely expected to be on the move during this summer's transfer window, having dropped down the pecking order at the club last season.

Maguire kept hold of the armband upon Ten Hag's arrival as head coach, and he started the 2022-23 campaign in the first XI, but poor showings against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford saw him drop out of the side.

Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are all ahead of him in the pecking order, while Luke Shaw was also picked over him in the middle of the defence last season.

West Ham United are thought to lead the interest in a player who only started eight Premier League games last season, although the Hammers are believed to be eyeing a loan move.

According to Sky Sports News, Maguire was 'unhappy and angry' at the captaincy situation, but the defender will 'not be short of options' this summer if he does decide to leave.

"It would be fair to say that Maguire is unhappy and angry about what's happened. The good news is that he won't be short of options, despite some of the level of things you read on social media and how he's ridiculed and targeted," said reporter Kaveh Solhekol.

"People are very well aware of his quality, his talents and his leadership qualities. People have short memories - just a few months ago he was in the Sky Sports team of the Qatar World Cup, and a year before that he was in the official UEFA team of Euro 2020.

"He's still got a lot to offer, it might not be at Man Utd, but he's going to take his time and consider his options - and he's not short of them."

Maguire has received a pay rise this summer in a contract that runs for another two years, though, which could make it difficult for Man United to move him on. body check tags ::
