Former Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin has claimed that Matteo Darmian is one of the best signings of the season in terms of value for money.
The 25-year-old Italy international was signed by Louis van Gaal in the summer from Torino for a fee of £12.7m.
Despite being new to the club and the Premier League, he has impressed fans and pundits alike with his performances for the Red Devils thus far.
Irwin told the Sunday Times: "It's very hard to go and pick a player these days where you can sign him for a decent fee and there aren't two or three other top clubs fighting with you.
"[Darmian's age] is a good age to come in. At full-back, you can be in an exposed position and when you're a young full-back you make mistakes and learn from them.
"To get that quality of footballer - for that money - is excellent."
Darmian began his senior career at AC Milan, before plying his trade in Serie A for Padova, Palermo and Torino until his move to Old Trafford.
