John Murtough 'fighting to save job at Manchester United'

Director of football John Murtough faces a fight to save his job at Manchester United, according to a report.

Manchester United could reportedly sack John Murtough in the near future despite the fact that he has only just been appointed as the club's first director of football.

The Red Devils announced last month that Murtough had been promoted from his role as head of football development to a position where he had overall responsibility for all football matters.

However, according to Football Insider, the club chief is now fighting to save his job following the resignation of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The report claims that Woodward made the final decision to promote Murtough, who 'is not widely popular among the club's staff', and the 20-time English champions could now decide to relieve him of his duties.

Man United were confirmed as one of the founding members of the European Super League on Sunday evening before withdrawing following a huge backlash from a number of leading figures.

Woodward's exit is believed to have been directly related to the breakaway competition despite suggestions that he had already decided to move on before the tournament was announced.
