Roy Keane: 'I relished Juan Sebastian Veron competition at Manchester United'

Former player Roy Keane reveals that he enjoyed competing with Juan Sebastian Veron for a place in Manchester United's midfield.

Roy Keane has revealed that he enjoyed the challenge of keeping his place ahead of Juan Sebastian Veron in Manchester United's midfield.

Despite United going through a successful period on the pitch, Sir Alex Ferguson brought in Veron from Lazio for a British record in 2001.

However, while acknowledging that the Argentine did not showcase his true ability in the Premier League, Keane has admitted that he relished the test of retaining his spot in the starting lineup.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the former captain said: "I always enjoyed that. That was probably my favourite part of being at a brilliant club. When I first went to United you had Incey (Paul Ince), Robbo (Bryan Robson), Butty (Nicky Butt) coming through, Scholesy (Paul Scholes), and then Veron.

"I used to get excited when the club would sign a big player because that's the nature of the game. Even when I first came to United, I remember shaking hands with Robbo, a player I had big respect for, but Robbo knew I was after his position.

"So when other lads were coming through, and even Veron's a good example. Veron came to the club, he was an excellent player, okay it didn't work out for him at United, but he was an excellent player."

Veron scored 11 goals from 82 appearances in all competitions during his two years at Old Trafford.
