Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane questions the character of Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has questioned the character of David de Gea, who signed a new long-term contract with the Red Devils last week.

The Spain international ended the speculation surrounding his future by penning a new deal until the summer of 2023 with the option of a further 12 months.

The 28-year-old has made 368 appearances for United in all competitions since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, developing into one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his time at the club.

De Gea's form over the last 12 months has been widely criticised, though, and Keane has claimed that he has "always had question marks" over the Spaniard.

"Goalkeepers can make mistakes but I've always worried about him," Keane told Sky Sports News. "Every time I've watched him it's the character side of the game. He never seems to be commanding. I never get the impression he's the type of character that puts demands on people around him.

"The big test for goalkeepers, especially at Manchester United is how you react after a mistake, and he's making far too many mistakes. I've just never been convinced on the character side of him.

"Technically, is he a good goalkeeper? Of course, he is. There's no getting away from that but I think it's more about the package. I've always had questions marks over him."

United's indifferent start to the 2019-20 campaign continued on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss at West Ham United in the Premier League.
