Peter Schmeichel: Manchester United "have bored me to death"

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel confesses to have been 'bored to death' by the team's performances this season.

Peter Schmeichel has launched a scathing verbal attack on Manchester United's playing style under Louis van Gaal's management this term.

Ahead of tonight's final game of the season against Bournemouth, the Red Devils have scored just 46 Premier League goals.

That is less than 17th-placed Sunderland (48), while mid-table Chelsea and Everton (both 59) comfortably beat United's tally.

Such a statistic has resulted in calls for Van Gaal to be relieved of his duties at Old Trafford, and while the club's former goalkeeper did not go that far, he was highly critical of the Dutchman's work.

"Manchester United, which is a club that I absolutely love and I have followed since I was a little kid, have bored me to death this season," he told Sky Sports News.

"We are one of those clubs that has been dragged in completely the wrong direction. We never played the way we play football, we never play for a 1-0 and then defend. It is always go for the second [goal], go for the third [goal].

"All the hard work that Sir Alex put in to recover what was there from Sir Matt Busby has been undone. I, as a fan, want the team to be first of all winning, but I want them equally as much to entertain."

Schmeichel was part of a United side that won five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and one Champions League.
