Peter Schmeichel has insisted that Manchester United will recover from their disappointing performance in the league last season.
The Red Devils struggled under the leadership of David Moyes and missed out on a place in Europe after finishing seventh in the Premier League.
There has been renewed optimism around Old Trafford since the arrival of Louis van Gaal, and Schmeichel believes that his former club can reclaim their place among European football's elite.
"I still consider Manchester United to be one of the biggest clubs in the world," he told The Mirror.
"You could argue we are not because we are not in the Champions League. But I don't think one year makes a difference.
"I think you can have one bad year if you bounce back from it, and I think we can."
Schmeichel helped United to win five Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at the club.
