Paul Scholes: 'Ed Woodward has a lot to prove at Manchester United'

Paul Scholes says that Manchester United's executive vice chairman Ed Woodward needs to prove himself in the transfer market this summer.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has questioned the ability of executive vice chairman Ed Woodward to bring in the right calibre of players at Old Trafford.

Woodward, who took on the role following the departure of David Gill last year, was criticised for failing to land big-name targets, including Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas, last summer.

The Red Devils only acquired the signature of Marouane Fellaini for a reported £27m, and followed that up with the capture of Juan Mata from Chelsea in January for a club-record £37m fee.

After less than 10 months as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor, David Moyes was dismissed from his post in April, making way for Louis van Gaal who agreed a three-year deal on Monday.

In his blog for Paddy Power, Scholes wrote: "David Moyes took a lot of stick, but I believe he's a top manager. I'd question if 10 months was enough time.

"Ed Woodward has an awful lot to prove this time that he's good enough at his job. He has to bring the players in that the new manager wants. It's obvious that last year he didn't manage to do that. If he doesn't, we are not going to get anywhere near the top."

United finish seventh in the Premier League table in the 2013-14 campaign.
