Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag equalled a 118-year-old record when his side recorded a 1-0 win over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils entered the clash with Marco Silva's side off the back of successive defeats to Manchester City and Newcastle United in the Premier League and EFL Cup respectively.

Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time winner to secure all three points at Craven Cottage, though, with the 20-time English champions managing to bounce back from the damaging home defeats.

The win was Ten Hag's 50th since arriving as Man United head coach, and it came in his 79th game at the helm.

As a result, the Dutchman has equalled a record which has been held by Ernest Mangnall since 1905.

Indeed, Mangnall also managed 50 wins from his first 79 games in charge of the Red Devils, and Ten Hag has become the joint-quickest head coach to reach that number of victories.

Jose Mourinho came close to breaking the record, but the Portuguese ultimately needed 81 games in charge of the Manchester giants to reach 50 victories.

Legendary ex-manager Sir Alex Ferguson did not rack up 50 wins until his 105th match in charge, while inspirational figure Sir Matt Busby needed 96 matches to record his 50th victory.

Ten Hag has lost 20 of his 79 games, though, with only nine draws occurring since his arrival at Old Trafford.

The 53-year-old led Man United to a third-place finish in last season's Premier League, while he also ended the team's six-year trophy drought by securing the EFL Cup.

The Red Devils have already lost eight times in all competitions this season, though, including five times in the Premier League, with a total of 18 points from 11 matches leaving them in eighth in the table.

Man United have also lost two of their opening three matches in the group stage of the Champions League, and they now face a must-win fixture away to Copenhagen on Wednesday night.

The team were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Newcastle last week, meanwhile, and eight losses from their first 15 matches proved to be the team's worst start to a campaign since 1962-63.

There has been speculation surrounding Ten Hag's future, but it is understood that he is being backed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is expected to take over football operations at the club when his 25% purchase is confirmed. body check tags ::
