Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has backed Mason Mount to make his mark for the club after an injury-hit first campaign at Old Trafford.

The England international penned a five-year contract with the Red Devils upon his arrival last summer and was handed the famous number seven shirt.

Mount has been restricted to just 12 appearances this term, though, with his last outing coming against Luton Town in the Premier League in the middle of November.

The 25-year-old has had three separate injuries during his short time at Man United, but he has recently returned to full first-team training at Old Trafford.

There have been suggestions that Mount could be in the squad for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final with Liverpool, having made excellent progress in his recovery.

Ten Hag is "convinced" that Mount will prove himself at Man United after a slow start, insisting that the attacker can be "a very good player" for the club.

"I'm convinced he will be," Ten Hag told reporters during his press conference. "He didn't have a chance to prove this point, but he will be a very good player for Manchester United.

"It's really unfortunate, it's really disappointing for him but also for us when you have such a class player in your middle, and you can't play him.

"He had three injuries as we all know, so he didn't any time get in a rhythm. But I'm sure when he is fit and he plays he will get into that rhythm and he will contribute to a successful Manchester United, I'm sure."

Mount scored 33 goals and registered 37 assists in 195 appearances for Chelsea before making the move to Man United last year.

"Just as we need our players on top form, the same is true of our fans. The challenge to you is to help us make the most of our home advantage in the last cup game to be played at Old Trafford this season," Ten Hag wrote in United Review ahead of the clash with Liverpool.

"Cup games are do-or-die and we need the players and fans to give energy to each other, if we are to progress to the semi-finals.

"The prizes on offer today are huge: a return to Wembley, a step closer to a major trophy and a win over our biggest rivals. To achieve those goals, everybody inside Old Trafford has a part to play, working as one big team. Together, we are a formidable force."

Man United will enter the clash with Liverpool off the back of a win over another Merseyside outfit, having beaten Everton 2-0 at Old Trafford in the Premier League last weekend. body check tags ::
