Louis van Gaal has said that Rio Ferdinand made the right decision in leaving Manchester United at the end of the 2013-14 season.
The defender's 12-year spell at Old Trafford came to an end when he was not offered a new contract, agreeing a one-year deal with Queens Park Rangers earlier this summer.
The United manager told reporters: "There is a time to stay and a time to go and I think he has decided to go. He was a great player and maybe he is still a great player but there is always a time to go with a club."
Ferdinand will return to Old Trafford when QPR face United on Sunday.
