Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal claims that it will take him "three years" to fix the problems surrounding the club.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that it will take him "three years" to turn the club back into contenders for the Premier League title.

The Red Devils have had a poor start to the campaign under the Dutchman, despite their extravagant spending in the summer, as they have taken just 13 points from their 10 matches.

Van Gaal has insisted that there is no quick remedy to United's woes, and he feels that fixing the club could take as long as three seasons.

"We are in a process and that process shall take more than one year," Van Gaal told reporters. "It shall take three years.

"I cannot say when the results are coming. When I did it with Bayern Munich it was December 8. It can be February 1. But it doesn't matter. This is a process of three years. I have signed for three years.

"It takes a lot of time. But at the end, when they know it and they are doing the things with conscience, the results shall come. Our goal [this season] is to get back in the Champions League."

United face Crystal Palace in their Premier League clash later today.
