Manchester United are through to the fourth round of the League Cup thanks to strikes from Wayne Rooney, debutant Andreas Pereira and in-form Anthony Martial against Ipswich Town.
Rooney opened the scoring in the 23rd minute following sustained pressure from Van Gaal's side as he latched on to a Daley Blind through-ball before firing past Bartozs Bialkowski.
The Ipswich keeper made several saves during the first period, most notably from Pereira and Juan Mata, to keep his side in the game.
Brazil Under-21 international Pereira, making his first competitive start for the club, curled a free kick past the helpless Bialkowski after 60 minutes to double United's lead.
Ipswich's Polish keeper again denied United with a fingertip save from another Mata effort.
Substitute Anthony Martial made it 3-0 to United by slotting past Bialkowski from a Memphis Depay through-ball.
The French striker's fourth goal in as many games ensured that United will be in Wednesday night's draw for the fourth round of the League Cup.
