Newcastle United hold Manchester United to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

Newcastle United have drawn 0-0 against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils started brightly and Wayne Rooney had the ball in the back of the net in the opening three minutes, but he was flagged for offside by the assistant referee.

Two minutes later, United breached the Newcastle defence once again, but this time Rooney's shot was straight at Tim Krul.

The early United onslaught continued, and next up was Juan Mata whose shot was too tame to trouble Krul.

Mata had their next chance and directed the ball towards the near post. Once again, Krul was equal to it to keep the scores level.

Memphis Depay was also causing problems to the Newcastle defence, and he went past Chancel Mbemba before hitting a shot at Krul.

Against the run of play, Aleksandar Mitrovic nearly gave the Magpies the lead when he hit the crossbar from a Mbemba cross.

Newcastle then came close again on the verge of half time when Ayoze Perez shot narrowly wide of the right post.

The away team started well in the second but it was Manchester United that had the first chance of the half. Chris Smalling should have hit the back of the net but was unable to make good enough contact from a corner.

The second half was much quieter than the first, and it was not until the 73rd minute when either team had their next chance. Rooney's cross found Mata on the edge of the area but he volleyed the ball wide.

Krul was called into action twice in quick succession. First, he stopped a strike from Mata before Luke Shaw scuffed an effort into the arms of the Dutchman.

United had a great chance to break the deadlock with 10 minutes remaining. Michael Carrick slipped a pass to Javier Hernandez, who then teed up Mata for a strike. The Spaniard's strike deflected off a defender and fell kindly for Hernandez, but Krul made yet another save.

Into stoppage time, a corner was aimed towards Smalling, and the central defender's header struck the right post as Newcastle somehow came away with a clean sheet.

Newcastle went straight up the other end and Papiss Cisse's low cross went inches past Florian Thauvin's outstretched leg. Thirty seconds later, Garrick's long-range shot fizzed narrowly past the left post.
