Manchester United have announced that Jonny Evans has signed a new one-year contract at Old Trafford to take him until the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Evans returned to the Red Devils last year following his release from Leicester City, and his contribution, both on and off the field, during pre-season saw him handed a 12-month contract.

The Northern Ireland international was brought in as back-up, but due to the club's injury problems in the middle of their defence, he ended last season with 30 appearances to his name.

Evans's contract expired at the end of June, but he has been locked in talks with the 20-time English champions over a fresh deal, having made a strong impression in 2023-24.

Man United have now confirmed that the 36-year-old has signed a new one-year contract.

Evans signs new one-year deal at Old Trafford

"I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season," he told the club's official website. "To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.

"Returning to the club last season was an honour; representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic teammates under an excellent manager.

"Winning the FA Cup together was an unforgettable experience; I know we can challenge for more trophies in the season ahead."

Evans featured on 23 occasions in the Premier League last season, and he has now represented the Red Devils on 228 occasions in all competitions across two spells.

During his first period at Old Trafford, the defender won three Premier League titles, two League Cups, four Community Shields, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

What does the deal mean for Man United's summer plans?

Man United could still bring in three new centre-backs this summer despite Evans's new contract, although it is more likely that two will arrive.

A deal for Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt is believed to be close to completion, with the Netherlands international expected to move to Old Trafford in the near future.

The Red Devils have also had an offer accepted by Lille for Leny Yoro, while Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite remains a leading target for the 20-time English champions.

Lisandro Martinez is certain to stay, but Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof face uncertain futures, and it is certainly possible that both could leave this summer.

Man United began their pre-season training earlier this week, and the Red Devils will play their first friendly of the summer against Norwegian outfit Rosenborg on Monday. body check tags ::
