Athletic Bilbao attacker Inaki Williams has revealed that Manchester United made contact over a potential summer move before he signed a new long-term deal at San Mames.
United were reportedly prepared to pay £81m to land the 25-year-old as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku in the latter stages of the summer transfer window.
Williams ultimately penned a new long-term deal with Bilbao, though, and the Spain international has insisted that staying with the Basque club was always his first choice.
"I had contact from Manchester United but I cannot tell you who it was," Williams told Cadena Ser. "My number one option has always been to stay at Athletic Club and to retire here."
The attacker has netted 50 goals in 207 appearances for Bilbao in all competitions, including once in three La Liga appearances at the start of the 2019-20 campaign.
United failed to replace either Lukaku or Alexis Sanchez in the summer transfer window, leaving head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer short of options in the final third of the field.
