Harry Maguire is reportedly fearful that he will have to leave Manchester United this summer in order to keep hold of his starting spot for England at Euro 2024.

The Red Devils captain has dropped down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez forming an impressive partnership in the middle of the defence.

Injuries to Varane and Martinez have recently allowed Maguire to feature on a more regular basis, but he was suspended for the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion and then missed out against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Thursday through injury.

Maguire returned to the squad against Aston Villa on Sunday but was only on the bench, with Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof again starting in the middle of the defence.

The 30-year-old is arguably now Man United's fifth-choice central defender, and he has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford ahead of the summer window.

According to the Daily Mail, Maguire is keen to remain at Man United and fight for his spot, but he fears that a lack of action could cost him a starting role at Euro 2024, should England qualify.

Three Lions head coach Gareth Southgate has continued to back the former Sheffield United youngster, but it would be difficult to start him next summer if he again struggles for action next term.

The report claims that West Ham United, Inter Milan and Roma were all keen on Maguire in January, and the trio could reignite their interest when the summer window opens for business.

At this moment in time, Man United are not believed to be actively looking to sell him, but the club are thought to be keen to bring in another centre-back, which would likely lead to the Englishman departing.

Leicester City have also been credited with an interest in their former player, but he would have to be prepared to accept a drop on his current £190,000-a-week wage packet in order to leave.

The defender has made 28 appearances for the Red Devils during the 2022-23 campaign, with only 13 of those coming in the Premier League.

Martinez is expected to be fit for the start of next season, while Varane could return for the FA Cup final at the start of June, meaning that there is not a clear return to the first XI for Maguire moving forward.

The Englishman made a big-money move to Old Trafford from Leicester in the summer of 2019, and he has represented the club on 172 occasions, scoring seven goals and registering five assists.

Maguire's current deal with the 20-time English champions is due to run until June 2025. body check tags ::
