Manchester United have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
After allowing Dean Henderson to join Nottingham Forest on loan for the 2022-23 campaign, the Red Devils are on the lookout for a new number two to provide competition for David de Gea and Tom Heaton.
According to Blick, via Sky Sports News in Germany, United have made contact with 33-year-old Sommer over a proposed move to Old Trafford.
The report adds that Sommer is 'very flattered' by United's offer but is concerned that he would not play regularly for Erik ten Hag's side.
The 74-cap Switzerland international wants to be a number-one goalkeeper and does not want to risk his chances of representing his country at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
United's current first-choice stopper De Gea endured a nightmare afternoon between the sticks last weekend as he made two mistakes leading to goals in their heavy 4-0 defeat at Brentford.
Sommer has spent the last eight years with Monchengladbach and has made 326 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit across all competitions, including 36 starts last season.
The experienced goalkeeper has just 12 months remaining on his contract, however, and although an offer to extend his deal is on the table, he is believed to be considering his options.
Sommer is understood to have turned down the chance to join Nice earlier this summer before the French side opted to sign Kasper Schmeichel from Leicester City.
The Foxes have since been linked with a potential move for the Swiss stopper, while another unnamed Premier League club are also believed to be keeping tabs on his situation.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that Sommer is believed to be one of three goalkeepers that Man United are considering as a backup option.
Romano has also stated that Leeds United stopper Illan Meslier is also on their radar, but the West Yorkshire outfit have no intentions to negotiate with the Red Devils.
The 21-year-old Frenchman is considered 'untouchable' by Leeds and they view him as an important part of their project under manager Jesse Marsch.
So far this summer, Man United have signed left-back Tyrell Malacia, centre-back Lisandro Martinez and midfielder Christian Eriksen, but the Red Devils have recently grown frustrated in the transfer market as they are struggling to persuade a number of their targets to move to Old Trafford.
A recent report claims that Ten Hag is keen to recruit at least five new players before the transfer window shuts on September 1. body check tags ::
