Manchester United allegedly contemplated launching a bid for Brighton & Hove Albion forward Glenn Murray last week.
Having struggled to find a replacement for the injured Marcus Rashford, United eventually got a loan deal over the line for Shanghai Shenhua's Odion Ighalo during the closing minutes of the January transfer window.
However, according to the Daily Mail, Murray was placed on a shortlist of potential arrivals before the transfer of the former Watford man.
The 36-year-old has only been used as backup at the Seagulls since the arrival of Graham Potter, contributing two goals from five starts and 12 substitute outings in all competitions.
While Murray has since penned an extension to his contract at the Amex Stadium, there had been the possibility of the veteran being sold by the South-coast outfit.
