Youri Tielemans has insisted that he does not regret staying at Leicester City over the summer despite the team's struggles in the early stages of the 2022-23 campaign.

The Foxes have only picked up one point from their first seven Premier League games of the season, which has left them bottom of the table.

Tielemans was strongly linked with a move away from Brendan Rodgers's side over the summer, with Arsenal and Manchester United both said to be keen on his services.

The 25-year-old ultimately remained at the King Power Stadium, but his contract is due to expire next June, and it appears unlikely that he will be signing an extension with the former English champions.

Tielemans has admitted that linking up with the Belgium squad has been "a bit of fresh air" due to Leicester's struggles in the early stages of the campaign.

"I'm happy to get a bit of fresh air here [with Belgium] because it's tough at Leicester right now," Sky Sports News quotes Tielemans as saying. "It's clear that things are not going well at the club. We are doing everything we can as a team.

"At Leicester, the consecutive defeats have affected us as a group. We need to benefit from this break to recharge our batteries. It's hard to get it off my mind as it keeps running through my head. Only my kids sometimes prevent me from thinking about it.

"I'm not going to speak too much about my contract situation at the moment. I didn't leave Leicester in the summer as I always said the project had to be the right one. Just because things are getting worse now at Leicester doesn't mean I should regret [staying]."

As it stands, Tielemans would be free to hold talks with foreign clubs at the start of January over a pre-contract, and a number of sides are believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation.

A recent report claimed that Man United were lining up a winter move for the midfielder, who could be available in a cut-price deal.

Tielemans joined Leicester from Monaco in January 2019, initially on loan, and he has made 166 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions, scoring 24 goals and registering 25 assists.

The midfielder was a vital player at club level last season, making 50 appearances in all competitions, contributing seven goals and five assists in the process.

Tielemans has also been heavily involved early this term, scoring once and providing one assist in eight appearances for Rodgers's side.

Belgium are preparing to face Wales and the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League, while Roberto Martinez's side will start their 2022 World Cup against Canada on November 23. body check tags ::
