Manchester United have confirmed that they have signed Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham Hotspur for the 2023-24 campaign.

The Red Devils entered the market for a left-back following the news that Luke Shaw would be out until the latter stages of the year due to a muscular issue.

Reguilon emerged as the team's top target on Thursday, and Man United head coach Erik ten Hag confirmed during his press conference on Friday that the defender had already trained at Carrington.

An official announcement has now arrived, with the 26-year-old joining the 20-time English champions on loan for the season, although there is believed to be a break clause which can be activated in January.

"In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down," Reguilon told the club's official website.

"Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.

"I know that I can contribute to Manchester United this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities."

Meanwhile, Man United's football director John Murtough said: "Once it became clear that we needed to bring in another left-back we assessed a number of targets and acted quickly to sign Sergio. He possesses all the required qualities to help us achieve our aims this season.

"He has good experience in both the Premier League and in European competitions, so he is ready to come into the squad and perform straight away."

Addressing Reguilon during his press conference on Friday, Ten Hag said: "He is a very experienced player, a player for big clubs, a player that's played already a lot of games in La Liga, in the Premier League.

"So, he has a very good background, we have seen he can play very intense football, so we are happy.

"While we had a problem with Luke Shaw injured, Ty[rell] Malacia injured, they are, for [the] long term, out, so I think we responded very well in that emergency situation."

The left-back is expected to be in the squad for Sunday's Premier League clash against Arsenal, although he is likely to be on the bench, with Diogo Dalot set to continue in that area of the field.

Reguilon, who spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid, is yet to represent Tottenham this season due to the speculation surrounding his future, but he has played 67 times for the club in total. body check tags ::
