Manchester United are reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Girona defender Miguel Gutierrez during this summer's transfer window due to Luke Shaw's ongoing injury problems.

Shaw, 28, has been restricted to just 15 appearances in all competitions this season due to muscular issues, and there are fears that his latest problem could keep him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Man United's back-up left-back Tyrell Malacia has not made a single appearance this term, meanwhile, as he struggles to recover from two separate knee operations.

Victor Lindelof and Sofyan Amrabat have both recently been used at left-back due to the team's issues in that area of the field, and according to Mundo Deportivo, the club are planning to bring in a new left-sided full-back this summer to avoid a similar situation next season.

The report claims that Gutierrez is of interest to Erik ten Hag's side, with the 22-year-old impressing for Girona this season, scoring once and providing six assists in 30 appearances in all competitions.

The Spaniard has scored once and provided four assists in 25 La Liga appearances, with Girona enjoying an excellent campaign, sitting second in the table.

Gutierrez made the move to Real Madrid from Getafe in 2011, spending nine years in the capital outfit's academy system before debuting for the first team in 2021.

The defender only made 10 appearances for Real Madrid's senior side before moving to Girona in August 2022, and he has now played 66 times for the Catalan outfit, scoring three times and providing 10 assists.

A recent report claimed that Los Blancos have the option to re-sign Gutierrez for just €8m (£6.8m) during the upcoming summer transfer window, and head coach Carlo Ancelotti addressed the situation last month.

"All the players in Miguel Gutierrez's situation are controlled by the club. Miguel has done well at this stage and in the summer we will make the right decision again," Ancelotti told reporters at the time.

There is said to be a release clause of €35m (£29.9m) for clubs other than Real Madrid, and Girona are expected to find it difficult to keep hold of the defender beyond the end of the season.

Los Blancos are believed to be keen to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich this summer, which could open the door for Man United to sign Gutierrez.

The Red Devils are expected to be busy during the upcoming transfer market under new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, although they will need to make some first-team sales in order to boost their squad due to the rules surrounding Financial Fair Play. body check tags ::
