RB Leipzig have confirmed that Timo Werner "is in talks with another club" over a January move, with Tottenham Hotspur said to be close to confirming his signature on loan.

Werner's future has been the subject of speculation over the last few weeks, with Manchester United thought to be considering making a move for the ex-Chelsea attacker during the winter transfer window.

However, Tottenham have recently moved to the head of the queue for the Germany international, and according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, a deal has now been agreed.

"Tottenham will cover 100% of Timo Werner salary until June as part of the agreement with RB Leipzig," Romano posted on his official X account.

"Medical tests booked, he's due to travel this weekend in order to be ready for training next week. Werner "can't wait" to work under Ange Postecoglou."

Leipzig confirmed on Saturday that Werner was not involved in their friendly against St Gallen due to discussions with another club over a mid-season move.

"Timo Werner is not in the squad for today's friendly, as he is in talks with another club," read a statement from the Bundesliga side via their social media channels.

Meanwhile, after the match, Leipzig head coach Marco Rose confirmed that a loan exit was close, with the forward wanting regular action in the second half of the campaign in the hope of securing a spot in the Germany squad for the European Championship.

"It's right that Timo wants to go on loan. Timo would like to go to the European Championship. We wish him all the best and are keeping our fingers crossed for him," Rose told reporters.

There have been suggestions that Tottenham will have the chance to sign Werner on a permanent basis this summer, with reports in Germany claiming that the purchase option will be around £15.5m.

The 27-year-old has found it difficult to get going during the 2023-24 campaign, only managing two goals and one assist in 14 appearances for Leipzig in all competitions.

Werner previously played in England for Chelsea between 2020 and 2022, but he found it difficult to secure a regular starting role and ultimately returned to Leipzig.

The forward netted 23 times and registered 21 assists in 89 appearances for Chelsea, including 10 goals and 13 assists in 56 appearances in the Premier League.

Werner is set to begin training with his new club next week and could therefore make his debut in their league clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on January 14. body check tags ::
