Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reportedly given the green light for the club to launch a move for Aston Villa centre-back Ron Vlaar.
Injuries and poor form have forced Van Gaal to make regular changes to his defence in the early stages of the season, and the club have been linked with a number of defenders ahead of the January transfer window.
According to The Mirror, the United boss has identified Vlaar as the perfect candidate after working with the 29-year-old during his time as Netherlands boss.
Vlaar's contract with Villa expires next summer, and the club could be forced to accept a cut-price deal to avoid losing him for nothing at the end of the season.
Recent reports have suggested that Arsenal could also join the race to sign Vlaar.
