Newcastle United are reportedly expected to fail with an approach for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
Despite a recent takeover bid, the Magpies are likely to be active in the transfer market as Steve Bruce looks to move the club into the Premier League's top 10.
That has led to speculation regarding an approach for Smalling, who has just enjoyed a strong season on loan at Italian outfit Roma.
However, according to the Daily Mail, the 30-year-old is not willing to entertain a switch to St James' Park during the summer window.
Having settled into life in Rome, Smalling's is currently waiting to see if the Serie A club can reach an agreement with United over a fee.
As it stands, United are not prepared to lower their valuation, said to be in the region of £20m.
