Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling during this summer's transfer window.
The 30-year-old enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Roma during the 2019-20 campaign, and the Italian giants are believed to be keen on a permanent deal for the Englishman.
The Serie A outfit are allegedly struggling to agree a fee with United, though, which could see them miss out on the chance to secure the centre-back's signature on a long-term basis.
According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle have been offered the opportunity to sign the former Fulham youngster, who would be prepared to take a pay cut on his current £130,000-a-week salary for the 'right club'.
The report claims that another loan move could be a possibility for Smalling, who has also been offered to 'a clutch of other top-flight sides'.
The defender, who made 37 appearances for Roma during the 2019-20 campaign, still has two years left to run on his current deal at Old Trafford.
